Mukutano

Who is Mukutano?
Mukutano in Swahili means Join together
Mukutano is a performance group where members perform traditional folk songs from Africa, The Caribbean and the African Diaspora. Group members also learn how to play djembe drums and other percussion instruments
The concept was developed by Program Director, Patricia G Whittaker and Executive Director, Paul Mulangu.
Mukutano was originally funded in 2008 as a ten-month project under the New Horizons for Seniors Program, administered by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC). This project brought together seniors from the African/Black community, seniors from diverse ethnic backgrounds, children and youth.
One of the goals of the New Horizons for Seniors (NHS) initiative was to reduce social isolation. Since inception, Mukutano has performed to audiences in excess of 300 people. Some performances have been at the New Westminster Multicultural Festival, The Burnaby Days Festival, Black History Market & Cultural Showcase, Granville Island Canada Day, The Surrey Fusion Festival – and many schools and seniors’ residences.
